Libraries have supported multiple formats for decades, from paper and microforms to audiovisual tapes and CDs. However, the newest medium, digital transmission has presented a wider scope of challenges and caused library patrons to question the established and recognized multiform in a library. Within the many questions posed, two distinct factors echo repeatedly. The first one is about the need of print medium in an increasingly digital world, and the second one focuses on the dangers of relying on a still-developing technology. This paper discusses Usage of Print and Electronic Resources in Madurai Diraviyam Thayumanavar (M.D.T) Hindu College Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu

Learning nuanced cross-disciplinary citation metric normalization using the hierarchical Dirichlet process on big scholarly data

Citation counts have long been used in academia as a way of measuring, inter alia, the importance of journals, quantifying the significance and the impact of a researcher's body of work, and allocating funding for individuals and departments. For example, the h-index proposed by Hirsch is one of the most popular metrics that utilizes citation analysis to determine an individual's research impact. Among many issues, one of the pitfalls of citation metrics is the unfairness which emerges when comparisons are made between researchers in different fields. The algorithm we described in the present paper learns evidence based, nuanced, and probabilistic representations of academic fields, and uses data collected by crawling Google Scholar to perform field of study based normalization of citation based impact metrics such as the h-index.Postprin

The Reality of Digital currency as a Financial Medium of Exchange

This paper presents a discussion of the requirements for the long term acceptance of digital currency as a financial medium of exchange through the examination of fundamental criteria associated with common tender and the examination of selected digital currencies. According to the U.S. Treasury, digital currencies are subject to regulation if that digital currency has a substitutive purpose for facilitating exchanging goods and services (Financial Crimes Enforcement Network, 2013). Although governments can place stipulations on currencies, users of common tender, such as digital currencies, expect at least three basic privileges for a digital currency to evolve from conception to realization. First, a digital currency must be considered intangible personal property similar to trademarks, copyrights, and patents. Second, ownership disputes must be subject to a system such as a Judicial Proceeding or Binding Arbitration to resolve property conflicts. Finally, a digital currency must be subject to similar regulatio

spaces. E is said to be finitely representable in F if, given e> 0 and a finite dimensional subspace E0 of E, there exists a subspace F0 of F such that d(E0, F0) _< 1 + e, where d(E0, F0) = inf { T T-1 ß T is an isomorphism from E0 onto F0} denotes the Banach-Mazur distance coefficient. E is said to be super-reflexive if every Banach space which is finitely representable in E is re-flexive. Super-reflexivity has been characterized in terms of the notion of J-convexity: suppose that n> _ 1 and that e> 0; E is said to be J(n, e)-convex if, for all Xl,..., x, • in the unit ball of E, we have inf Xl q-'' ' q- Xk-- Xk+l..... Reduction of Chromium (VI) when Solar Selective Black Chromium is Deposited in the Presence of Organic Additive

    Get PDF
Electrochemical dc methods were used to study the reduction of chromium (VI) in the presence of organic additives. It is shown that F–, thiourea, and citric acid are essential to enable deposition of black chrome from concentrated chromic acid solutions. A new formulation of the plating bath is defined. The optimum operating conditions under which spectrally selective surface of black chrome is deposited have been determined

The optimal magnetic resonance image (MRI) slice thickness required to assess cartilage volume accurately and efficiently in cross-sectional and longitudinal studies is unknown. We compared cartilage volume measured from MRI of the knees using different slice thicknesses (1.5 to 7.5 mm) and assessed longitudinal change. Methods. A total of 123 subjects with osteoarthritis had baseline and followup MRI on their symptomatic knee at 2 years. Medial and lateral tibial cartilage volumes were calculated using increasing slice thickness by extracting each second, third, fourth, or fifth slice area to calculate total volume, which was compared to the "gold standard" volume calculated from the original 1.5 mm slices. Results. There was little difference in the average medial and lateral tibial cartilage volume observed as the slice thickness increased from 1.5 to 7.5 mm; medial tibial cartilage volume ranged from 1750 µl to 1787 µl and lateral tibial cartilage volume ranged from 1949 µl to 2007 µl. There was also little absolute difference in the average change in medial and lateral tibial cartilage volume measured over 2 years. However, with increasing slice thickness, there was a decreased correlation between the tibial cartilage volume change calculated from the increased slice thickness, with the lowest correlation being 0.77 (p < 0.001) when the lateral cartilage volume calculated from the 7.5 mm slice was compared to the 1.5 mm slices. Conclusion. Increasing slice thickness may provide sufficiently accurate measurement of tibial cartilage volume and change over time in some studies. This would result in reduction in MRI scanning and postimaging processing time, which has the potential of increasing the feasibility of this technique. (J Rheumatol 2004;31:2444-8

An HDG Method for Dirichlet Boundary Control of Convection Dominated Diffusion PDE

We first propose a hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) method to approximate the solution of a \emph{convection dominated} Dirichlet boundary control problem. Dirichlet boundary control problems and convection dominated problems are each very challenging numerically due to solutions with low regularity and sharp layers, respectively. Although there are some numerical analysis works in the literature on \emph{diffusion dominated} convection diffusion Dirichlet boundary control problems, we are not aware of any existing numerical analysis works for convection dominated boundary control problems. Moreover, the existing numerical analysis techniques for convection dominated PDEs are not directly applicable for the Dirichlet boundary control problem because of the low regularity solutions. In this work, we obtain an optimal a priori error estimate for the control under some conditions on the domain and the desired state. We also present some numerical experiments to illustrate the performance of the HDG method for convection dominated Dirichlet boundary control problems

Consumption of a soy drink has no effect on cognitive function but may alleviate vasomotor symptoms in post-menopausal women; a randomised trial

Purpose: Cognitive decline is commonly reported during the menopausal transition, with memory and attention being particularly affected. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of a commercially available soy drink on cognitive function and menopausal symptoms in post-menopausal women. Methods: 101 post-menopausal women, aged 44–63 years, were randomly assigned to consume a volume of soy drink providing a low (10 mg/day; control group), medium (35 mg/day), or high (60 mg/day) dose of isoflavones for 12 weeks. Cognitive function (spatial working memory, spatial span, pattern recognition memory, 5-choice reaction time, and match to sample visual search) was assessed using CANTAB pre- and post-the 12 week intervention. Menopausal symptoms were assessed using Greene’s Climacteric Scale. Results: No significant differences were observed between the groups for any of the cognitive function outcomes measured. Soy drink consumption had no effect on menopausal symptoms overall; however, when women were stratified according to the severity of vasomotor symptoms (VMS) at baseline, women with more severe symptoms at baseline in the medium group had a significant reduction (P = 0.001) in VMS post-intervention (mean change from baseline score: − 2.15 ± 1.73) in comparison to those with less severe VMS (mean change from baseline score: 0.06 ± 1.21). Conclusions: Soy drink consumption had no effect on cognitive function in post-menopausal women. Consumption of ~ 350 ml/day (35 mg IFs) for 12 weeks significantly reduced VMS in those with more severe symptoms at baseline. This finding is clinically relevant as soy drinks may provide an alternative, natural, treatment for alleviating VMS, highly prevalent among western women
